The purchasing decision

OEM and ODM labels can be used differently between suppliers, so describe the actual work rather than relying on the acronym. A logo and colour update to a retained model is different from new dimensions, a new closure or an original pocket layout. State what is fixed, what can change and which drawings or samples the buyer provides.

Ask the supplier to identify the development steps for the proposed route. Artwork preparation, construction drawings, material selection and sample revisions may not all be required for a simple branding order. Conversely, a visually familiar product can still require development if the capacity, load or compartment design changes.

Keep ownership and use of supplied artwork, drawings and any project-specific tooling clear in the commercial discussion. Record the sample approval process and the information needed for repeat orders. A defined scope helps the buyer compare quotations and prevents a low initial figure from being mistaken for the total cost of a new bag programme.

Include these details in your enquiry

  • Reference model or original drawing
  • Fixed details and requested changes
  • Development stages and approval responsibilities
  • Artwork, tooling and repeat-order scope

Identify the model and the version of any drawing or artwork. Ask for assumptions, proposed changes, packing details and commercial terms to be shown in the quotation. MOQ, sample cost and production timing are confirmed for the agreed configuration.

Buyer questions

Is every private-label order a new design project?

No. Branding a retained construction and developing a new construction require different work. Describe the changes clearly.

What should be separated in the quotation?

Ask for the product configuration, development work, sample costs, packing and any project-specific setup to be identified.
