The purchasing decision

A retailer buying waterproof bags needs more than a list of colours and capacities. Start with the jobs customers need the bags to perform: keeping a small travel kit organised, carrying clothing beside the water, or walking with a larger outdoor load. Those jobs can call for different openings, straps and exterior pockets. A single shell material does not make the formats interchangeable.

Build the opening order around a small number of clearly differentiated designs. A compact roll-top bag, a shoulder-carry tube and a padded backpack can occupy different positions in the range. Give each a defined customer, price target and packing example. This makes it easier to evaluate wholesale quotes without ordering several visually different bags that solve the same problem.

Ask the supplier to quote the assortment by model and colour rather than as one total quantity. Review sample consistency across sizes, retail pack dimensions and the replenishment plan. A launch assortment should leave room for repeat orders without depending on a large collection of slow-moving variants.

Include these details in your enquiry

  • Target retail channel and destination market
  • Model-by-model quantity and colour split
  • Capacity examples with typical packed contents
  • Retail pack and replenishment requirements

Identify the model and the version of any drawing or artwork. Ask for assumptions, proposed changes, packing details and commercial terms to be shown in the quotation. MOQ, sample cost and production timing are confirmed for the agreed configuration.

Buyer questions

Should all sizes use the same construction?

Not automatically. Review closure access, strap placement and packed shape for each size. A scaled-up drawing is not a substitute for checking a loaded sample.

Can I compare suppliers using one total price?

Compare the same model mix, quantities, packing and commercial terms. Otherwise the apparent saving may come from a different specification.
